Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 16, Two railway projects were recently inaugurated in Anuradhapura, northern Sri Lanka, under the India-Sri Lanka development partnership, enhancing regional connectivity. These initiatives aim to improve transportation infrastructure for both passengers and freight in the region.

The 128km Maho-Omanthai railway line, a key component of the partnership, was funded with a $91 million contribution from India. Additionally, India invested $15 million to install an advanced signalling system along the Maho to Anuradhapura route, improving safety and efficiency.

According to a statement from the Indian government, these rail lines will support both passenger travel and cargo transport. “The two routes will serve both passenger and freight traffic, acting as a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s north-south rail connectivity,” the statement noted.

The projects are expected to strengthen Sri Lanka’s transportation network, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people between the northern and southern regions. By upgrading critical infrastructure, the initiatives contribute to economic development and regional integration.
