Wedoany.com Report-Dec.2, Sri Lanka has allocated $2.17 billion in its 2026 budget for infrastructure development, with priority given to expanding and modernising the country's transport network.

Of this amount, the Ministry of Transport, Roads and Highways will receive $1.11 billion to advance road projects nationwide. These include completing long-planned transport corridors and restarting several previously suspended road initiatives.
A dedicated $215 million has been set aside for construction of the Central Expressway section between Kadawatha and Mirigama. The ministry will also fund a feasibility study for a proposed elevated highway linking the expressway to Marine Drive in Colombo, aimed at easing traffic flow into the capital.
Additional resources will support widening and upgrading of key urban roads to improve capacity and safety.
The investment programme focuses on enhancing connectivity across Sri Lanka, reducing travel times, and supporting economic activity through more efficient movement of goods and passengers. Completion of these priority corridors is expected to strengthen both domestic and regional transport links while stimulating construction-sector employment in the coming years.
