Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 15, Repsol S.A., based in Madrid, Spain, has reached a significant milestone by producing 100% renewable gasoline on an industrial scale at its Tarragona complex. Announced on October 15, 2025, this development positions Spain and Repsol as leaders in sustainable energy solutions. The renewable gasoline, fully compatible with existing gasoline vehicles, reduces net CO2 emissions by over 70% compared to conventional gasoline.

The Nexa 95 Gasoline, Repsol’s premium 95-octane renewable fuel, is available at 20 service stations in Madrid and Catalonia, with plans to expand to 30 stations by year-end, including Tarragona, Valencia, Zaragoza, and Bilbao. This complements Repsol’s existing Nexa Diesel, also 100% renewable, offering viable decarbonization options for the 97% of Spain’s vehicle fleet that relies on combustion engines.

Repsol advocates for supportive policies, including long-term targets and favorable tax frameworks, to accelerate renewable fuel adoption. Such measures could encourage investment in efficient engine technologies, addressing the aging Spanish vehicle fleet, where the average age is 14.5 years, and nearly one-third of vehicles exceed 20 years.

The company’s multi-faceted approach to decarbonizing mobility integrates renewable fuels, electrification, LPG, and renewable hydrogen. Repsol emphasizes combining all energy solutions to ensure supply reliability, meet diverse customer needs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions efficiently.

At its Cartagena complex, Repsol operates the Iberian Peninsula’s first facility dedicated to producing 100% renewable fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. A second plant in Puertollano, set to open in 2026, will produce 200,000 tons annually for road and maritime transport. The renewable gasoline process, developed over 20 years with Honeywell at Repsol’s Technology Lab near Madrid, optimizes engine performance and durability.

Repsol has secured supply agreements with major transport companies in Spain and Portugal, including Scania, Grupo Sesé, XPO, and others, serving clients like Coca-Cola and Seat. Partnerships with passenger transport operators like Alsa and maritime companies like Royal Caribbean, as well as airlines such as Iberia and Ryanair, promote renewable fuel use. In October 2022, the Spanish Air Force’s Patrulla Águila demonstrated the efficacy of these fuels during Spain’s National Day parade.

This achievement underscores Repsol’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy, leveraging innovation to support environmental goals while maintaining compatibility with existing infrastructure, thereby fostering a practical transition to cleaner mobility solutions across Spain and beyond.
