Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 19, Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) and ESR, a leading Asia-Pacific real asset manager, have formed a joint venture to develop a 130-megawatt hyperscale data centre campus in Minoh City, Osaka, Japan.
The partnership will deliver the first 65 MW phase, designed and built by ESR–Colt DCS, with operations managed by Colt DCS in Japan’s second-largest data centre market. Site preparation has begun, with construction of the initial building set to start in 2027 and operations expected by late 2029. The campus, spanning 140,000 square meters, was acquired and rezoned in collaboration with Minoh City authorities.
The facility targets LEED Gold certification and includes plans to enhance community infrastructure, supporting sustainable development in the region.
“Colt DCS has built a strong track record delivering world-class data centres for hyperscale customers in Japan. Our joint venture with ESR will accelerate our expansion, supporting the growth of global cloud customers and the emerging AI sector,” said Niclas Sanfridsson, CEO of Colt DCS.
“Japan is a key pillar of our data centre strategy. This joint venture marks a milestone in delivering next-generation infrastructure that underpins digital growth across the region and drives long-term economic value for communities and customers alike,” said Stuart Gibson, Co-founder and Co-CEO of ESR.
Osaka’s data centre market is expanding rapidly, fueled by demand from hyperscale cloud providers and AI companies across the Asia-Pacific. ESR’s OS1 facility at the Cosmosquare Data Centre campus completed commissioning in 2025, while Colt DCS launched its Osaka Keihanna data centre in 2023, reinforcing the region’s growing digital infrastructure.
The Minoh City campus is designed to meet the needs of global technology firms, supporting the increasing demand for high-capacity data centres driven by advancements in cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The project aligns with efforts to bolster economic growth and digital innovation in Japan.
By combining Colt DCS’s operational expertise with ESR’s real estate development capabilities, the joint venture aims to deliver reliable, sustainable infrastructure. The focus on LEED Gold certification and community upgrades reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility and local engagement, ensuring long-term benefits for Minoh City and its residents.
