Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 10, Nokia and Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT), Latvia’s largest mobile operator and a major technology partner for the defense sector, have announced a strategic partnership to integrate Nokia’s advanced 5G radio technology with LMT’s defense communication solutions. The collaboration aims to create a high-capacity, secure, and resilient tactical communications system tailored for dedicated regional applications.
This partnership combines Nokia’s global expertise in 5G innovation with LMT’s experience in defense and communication systems to deliver scalable, next-generation connectivity for military operations. The integrated system will enable real-time data transmission among unmanned vehicles, sensors, and field units, improving situational awareness, coordination, and decision-making capabilities for national and coalition forces.
LMT has been a long-term partner of Nokia in developing Latvia’s mobile network infrastructure. Together, the companies have pioneered 5G-based defense applications to strengthen secure communications and operational capabilities along the eastern flank. LMT operates Europe’s first 5G military testbed at the Ādaži base, a key NATO site in Latvia. Supported by Nokia’s Banshee platform, the testbed has already produced innovations such as a portable 5G tactical network designed for deployment in diverse and challenging environments.
Juris Binde, President of LMT, said: “This partnership builds on our longstanding collaboration and shared commitment to advancing 5G capabilities for defense. Together with Nokia, we are enhancing the security, resilience, and operational readiness of national and allied forces, ensuring mission success even in the most demanding environments.”
Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defense at Nokia, emphasized the transformative potential of 5G in defense technology. He stated: “Tactical defense systems harness the high speed, low latency, and robust connectivity of 5G networks to enhance real-time operations on the battlefield. Our joint solution with LMT supports the modernization of military capabilities, enabling faster decision-making, seamless communication, and the integration of advanced technologies across tactical environments.”
The joint system under development will provide a foundation for modern, data-driven defense operations, allowing the integration of multiple assets and platforms across land, air, and sea domains. The use of 5G ensures uninterrupted, low-latency communication even in complex operational settings, enhancing both mobility and security.
By combining Nokia’s technological leadership with LMT’s operational expertise, the collaboration seeks to advance defense communications infrastructure and promote innovation in tactical connectivity. The project also contributes to broader efforts across Europe to modernize communication systems for security and defense purposes, underscoring the growing importance of 5G in mission-critical applications.
Through this agreement, Nokia and LMT reaffirm their shared goal of driving forward digital transformation in defense communications, creating more resilient and adaptable systems to support future operational needs in an increasingly interconnected and dynamic environment.
