Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 23, The UK Government has awarded support to three large-scale green hydrogen projects developed by Carlton Power, marking the country’s largest planned electrolyser deployment to date. The initiatives, located in England, are expected to begin supplying low-carbon hydrogen to industrial and transport users by 2027.
Plug Power is a US-based hydrogen technology company.
U.S.-based Plug Power has secured the contract to deliver 55 MW of electrolyser capacity together with long-term service agreements across the three sites, subject to final investment decisions. The installations comprise 30 MW at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, 15 MW at Trafford near Manchester, and 10 MW at Langage near Plymouth.
The facilities will produce green hydrogen by using renewable or low-carbon electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. This method enables the replacement of conventional hydrogen produced from natural gas in industrial processes.
At Barrow-in-Furness, six 5 MW Proton Exchange Membrane electrolysers supplied by Plug Power will provide dedicated hydrogen to consumer goods manufacturer Kimberly-Clark, supporting emission reductions at its adjacent paper products facility.
The Trafford Green Hydrogen scheme, situated within the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park, is scheduled to commence operations in 2027. It forms a core component of Greater Manchester’s regional hydrogen network and will supply industrial sites, freight operators, and municipal fleets.
At Langage near Plymouth, two 5 MW units will initially serve local industrial customers, with future expansion options for transport fuel and heating applications as market demand develops.
All three projects have received backing through the UK Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round under the Hydrogen Business Model. Final investment decisions for Barrow and Trafford are anticipated by the end of 2025, with Langage expected in early 2026.
When operational, the combined 55 MW capacity will represent the largest single electrolyser rollout currently planned in the UK, establishing important hydrogen production centres in North West England, the Greater Manchester area, and South West England.
The developments are regarded by government and industry participants as practical demonstrations of how green hydrogen can contribute to decarbonising energy-intensive sectors while enhancing domestic low-carbon fuel supply. Successful delivery of these schemes is expected to serve as a model for additional hydrogen clusters nationwide, supporting the UK’s longer-term targets for low-carbon hydrogen production through the 2030s.
