Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 24, Port Houston recorded robust activity in October 2025, with its public terminals handling 4.60 million short tonnes of cargo, reflecting a 12 percent increase compared to October 2024 and a 6 percent rise year-to-date.
Container throughput remained strong, contributing to a 6 percent year-to-date growth in total TEUs. In October alone, the port processed 365,773 TEUs, marking an 18 percent increase over the same month last year.
Charlie Jenkins, Chief Executive Officer of Port Houston, stated: “Volumes through Port Houston’s container terminals were remarkable in October. Our team handled 365,773 TEUs, an 18 per cent increase from the same month last year. Container volumes for the year are up 6 per cent, and that puts us firmly on track for our strongest container performance in history.”
Loaded exports showed particularly strong growth, rising 42 percent in October and 10 percent year-to-date, supported by continued demand from the region’s petrochemical and manufacturing industries. Loaded imports increased 8 percent for the month and 3 percent year-to-date, while steel imports grew 16 percent in October. General cargo volumes edged up 1 percent year-to-date.
Jenkins added: “Nearly all commodities handled at Port Houston’s terminals saw gains this month and we are in a great position as we near the end of the year, which is a remarkable accomplishment given the uncertainty in our industry throughout much of the year.”
Infrastructure development continues to advance. A new wharf at Bayport Container Terminal is scheduled for completion before the end of 2025. In October, Port Houston completed its portion of the Houston Ship Channel Expansion – Project 11, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The widened Galveston Bay reach now measures 700 feet, facilitating safer and more efficient two-way traffic for larger vessels.
This improvement allows vessels carrying 15,000 to 17,000 TEUs—consistent with current Panama Canal capacity—to call at Bayport Container Terminal. Similar capability is planned for Barbours Cut Container Terminal upon completion of its expansion in 2027. Remaining segments of Project 11 are being executed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with final completion targeted for 2029.
Jenkins commented: “Port Houston’s financial investment and dedication to delivering Project 11 benefits is a promise to the region we serve. Port Houston is committed to maritime economic development, and this expansion positions Houston’s port for the next era of growth, empowers our region, helps secure jobs, and strengthens the economic foundation that millions of Texans depend on.”
Earlier in September 2025, Port Houston surpassed 3 million TEUs year-to-date, reaching 3.27 million TEUs—the fastest pace in its history. These achievements reflect sustained operational performance and strategic infrastructure investment supporting growing trade volumes through one of North America’s leading gateway ports.
