Wedoany.com Report-Dec.5, London-based Zodiac Maritime, controlled by Eyal Ofer, has placed a substantial newbuilding order in China for six firm very large crude carriers (VLCCs) plus options for eight more at Jiangsu New Hantong Ship Heavy Industry. The contract forms part of a $1.6 billion fleet modernisation programme.
If all options are exercised, the 14-VLCC package would more than double Zodiac's current VLCC fleet and strengthen its position in the large crude tanker segment. The vessels are scheduled for delivery from the second half of 2028 will feature contemporary energy-efficiency technologies while retaining conventional fuel propulsion.
In addition to the tankers, Zodiac has secured options for up to six 9,000 teu containerships at the same yard, creating a multi-segment renewal initiative that covers both crude carriers and container vessels.
The order represents Zodiac Maritime's first cooperation with Jiangsu New Hantong and adds to the shipyard's strong recent orderbook. The facility has now secured 19 firm contracts for 2028–2029 deliveries across VLCCs, containerships, newcastlemax bulkers and kamsarmaxes, with several packages including additional options.
Zodiac's latest move follows earlier newbuilding commitments, including suezmax tankers at Samsung Heavy Industries' Vietnam facility and post-panamax containerships at China Merchants Jinling shipyard.
The programme reflects continued confidence among leading owners in long-term demand for large crude carriers, supported by evolving trade patterns and fleet replacement needs. By selecting modern conventional-fuel designs, Zodiac maintains operational flexibility while incorporating proven efficiency improvements ahead of broader industry transitions to alternative fuels.
