Wedoany.com Report-Dec.8, The Helsinki City Board has approved a €300 million harbour tunnel project that will connect Jätkäsaari directly to the Länsiväylä highway. The 2-kilometre underground link, fully financed by the Port of Helsinki, is scheduled for completion in the early 2030s.

Finland's capital Helsinki is to benefit from a new port tunnel

The primary objective is to accommodate growing passenger and vehicle ferry traffic between Helsinki–Tallinn route by concentrating all operations at West Harbour (Länsisatama). Once the tunnel is operational, heavy port-related traffic will be removed from surface streets in the Jätkäsaari district, significantly reducing congestion, noise and air pollution while improving road safety.

By rerouting vehicles underground, the project will free up surface space for urban development, public transport and pedestrian areas around the expanding West Harbour terminal.

Construction planning and detailed design work are now advancing, with the Port of Helsinki confirming that the investment supports long-term growth in maritime passenger volumes and enhances overall city-centre mobility. The tunnel forms a key part of Helsinki's strategy to modernise port infrastructure while maintaining a high-quality urban environment in the rapidly developing western waterfront districts.
