Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 13, The New York state government has launched a $86.7 million pavement improvement project along a nearly five-mile section of the New England Thruway (I-95) in Westchester County, USA. This effort targets a busy corridor handling about 120,000 vehicles daily, aiming to strengthen its structure and durability.

The I-95 project will target the removal and replacement of the most deteriorated sections on a five-mile stretch of roadway.

Work on I-95 begins with pavement repairs, focusing on replacing the most worn-out sections between mileposts 4.0 and 8.8 in both directions. Covering nearly 30 lane-miles, these upgrades intend to prolong the roadway’s lifespan and lessen the need for frequent fixes. After repairing concrete pavement and joints, a two-layer asphalt overlay will be added. The project stretches from just south of exit 15 (New Rochelle – The Pelhams – US Route 1) to exit 18A (Mamaroneck – Fenimore Road), including the overhaul and repaving of 12 interchange ramps.

Additionally, the initiative includes improvements to 12 bridges connected to I-95. Six bridges, such as the Centre Avenue bridge in New Rochelle, the Chatsworth Avenue bridge in Larchmont, and the Metro-North Railroad’s Larchmont station bridge, will be rehabilitated. The other six bridges along I-95 will receive resurfacing. Safety enhancements involve installing new guide rails, lighting, reflective striping, pavement markings, and replacing kerbs. Most construction, including paving, will occur overnight to reduce traffic interruptions.

DeFoe, a company from Mount Vernon, New York, is overseeing the project, with completion slated for the end of 2026. Meanwhile, a separate $61.8 million I-95 pavement project in the Bronx and southern Westchester, spanning mileposts 0.0 to 4.0, is set to finish by mid-2025. That effort includes rehabilitating 11 bridges and upgrading two pedestrian bridges in the Bronx.

Frank G Hoare, executive director of the New York State Thruway Authority, stated: “We are continuing our ongoing investment in Interstate 95, one of the most critical highway arteries in the Northeast. For the past several years, we have rehabilitated the highway from the Bronx into Westchester County. This project will continue this vital work for another five miles in Westchester by upgrading the roadway and its surrounding infrastructure for our neighboring communities, and the motorists that travel this commuter and commercial corridor.” His comments emphasize the project’s role in supporting regional connectivity and safety.

In a related effort, New York recently started a $61.5 million pavement improvement project on the New York State Thruway (I-90) across Ontario and Monroe counties, reflecting a broader commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure statewide. These initiatives aim to ensure reliable roadways for both local residents and commercial traffic.
