Wedoany.com Report-Jun 23, Argentina has authorized five genetically modified corn varieties for commercialization, integrating innovative traits to advance its agricultural sector. The decision was based on rigorous safety and technical reviews by Conabia and Senasa, ensuring no risks to health or the environment.

Conabia evaluated agroecosystem impacts, while Senasa confirmed safety for consumption. The first approval includes the corn event MON-87427-7 x MON-948Ø4-4 x MON-95379-3 x SYN-IR162-4 x MON-88Ø17-3, covering a quadruple stack and individual events MON-948Ø4-4 and MON-95379-3. These introduce short stature for better crop stability in harsh weather, reducing lodging, alongside insect resistance and glyphosate herbicide tolerance for improved pest and weed management.

The second approval covers the corn event MON-87427-7 x MON-948Ø4-4 x MON-ØØ6Ø3-6, featuring short stature for enhanced crop management flexibility and glyphosate tolerance, supporting efficient weed control in intensive agriculture.

An Argentine authority said: “The approval of these new events reinforces the National Government’s commitment to innovation in agricultural technology, providing tools that enable producers across the country to strengthen their agricultural campaigns and project higher production for both the domestic market and export.”

Corn, cultivated on approximately 10 million hectares each season, is expected to produce 52 million tons in 2024-2025. Argentina exports corn to Brazil, Peru, the United States, Spain, Vietnam, North Korea, and African countries like Algeria, meeting domestic and international demand.
