Wedoany.com Report-Jul. 14, New Murabba, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, has appointed UK-based Arup to design a 45,000-seat stadium in north-west Riyadh for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Spanning 19 square kilometers, the $50 billion New Murabba development aims to create 18 new neighborhoods, integrating the stadium as a cornerstone of a broader urban vision.

Arup’s responsibilities include design and planning of the stadium.

Arup’s role encompasses design, planning, and advisory services, focusing on sustainability and alignment with New Murabba’s goal of creating a forward-looking destination. The stadium is expected to enhance Riyadh’s entertainment and sports landscape, positioning the city as a global hub for leisure and major events.

Michael Dyke, CEO of New Murabba Development Company, signed the agreement with Arup Group CEO Jerome Frost. Dyke stated to Trade Arabia: “This stadium is not just a venue. It’s a destination in itself and a key part of our downtown vision. With Arup’s global experience in iconic sports venues, we’re shaping a future-ready hub that will welcome the world to Riyadh just in time for FIFA 2034.”

Initial designs for the stadium were unveiled last year, with construction targeted for completion in 2032. The project is designed to incorporate sustainable practices, ensuring the facility meets modern environmental standards while serving as a catalyst for regional growth.

Arup brings extensive experience to the project, having recently collaborated with Wright & Wright Architects to upgrade Lambeth Palace in London, England. That retrofit integrated low-carbon systems while preserving the palace’s historic Grade I-listed status, aligning with the Church of England’s net-zero objectives. Additionally, Arup contributed to the transformation of the Stadstheater Arnhem performing arts center in the Netherlands, showcasing its expertise in innovative design solutions.

The New Murabba Stadium project underscores Riyadh’s ambition to become a global leader in sports and entertainment.
