Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 17, The Port of Tyne has announced a £150 million ($177 million) investment to add 400 meters of deep-water quayside, enhancing its capacity to support the growing offshore wind sector. This expansion is part of the development of the Tyne Clean Energy Park, which will cover 930,000 square meters on both the north and south banks of the Port of Tyne.

An independent study by WSP estimates that this development could create up to 12,000 new jobs and contribute over £5.6 billion ($7.6 billion) to both the local and UK economies in the coming years. The Tyne Clean Energy Park aims to become a hub for the offshore renewables, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing sectors, which are expected to see significant growth.

The plan includes the construction of one kilometer of new and redeveloped deep-water quayside, capable of handling heavy-lift cargo, essential for the offshore wind and clean energy industries. The project is being developed within an Industrial Strategy Zone, which provides additional benefits similar to those of a modern freeport.

The first phase of the development, known as Howdon Quay, is already complete. This phase includes a 2,140 square meter warehouse and a dedicated berth, with a £6 million ($8.1 million) investment for its redevelopment. This will facilitate the growth of the offshore wind industry by offering enhanced infrastructure and facilities for storage and transport.

Matt Beeton, CEO of the Port of Tyne, highlighted the significance of this expansion, saying: “Accelerating offshore wind, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing is a national priority and requires decisive action. Boosted by Industrial Strategy Zone status that provides similar benefits to a modern freeport, our expanded Tyne Clean Energy Park is uniquely positioned to support this UK-wide initiative.”

This initiative will help the UK meet its clean energy goals and further solidify the Port of Tyne's role as a key player in the offshore wind sector.
