Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 26, A joint venture of Hochtief subsidiaries, Turner Construction Company and FlatironDragados, has officially opened the new Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport (SAN), marking a major upgrade to the airport’s infrastructure.
The $2.6 billion design-build project began in November 2021 and topped out in November 2024. The new terminal now features 19 gates, enhanced passenger amenities, and an outdoor check-in area. Additionally, the project added 8 km of roadways and bridges, along with a 5,200-space parking facility.
Terminal 1 forms part of a larger $3 billion multi-phase development scheduled for completion in 2028. When finished, the airport will have 30 gates over three storeys, including a central security checkpoint, expanded departure lounges, airside airline operation zones, and advanced baggage handling systems.
The second phase of construction is set to begin in October 2025. Planned features include a fully automated outbound and inbound baggage handling system, a “luminous wave wall,” commissioned artwork from seven artists, and an outdoor dining area offering views of the downtown skyline.
The joint venture secured the contract in September 2020, with Aecom appointed as programme manager in November 2024. Mario Martinez, Senior Vice President of FlatironDragados, stated: “Together, we’ve delivered a modern gateway that strengthens regional mobility, supports future growth and elevates the passenger experience for millions of travellers.”
The original Terminal 1, completed in 1967, was designed to handle 2.5 million passengers annually. Today, the terminal supports around 20 million passengers, highlighting the importance of the upgrade to meet growing demand.
The project reflects a focus on modernizing airport infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing passenger experience through contemporary design and advanced facilities.
