Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 11, AGY, based in Aiken, South Carolina, has partnered with Orion Compounding, located in Lugoff, South Carolina, to create an innovative nylon polyamide 12 (PA12) material reinforced with AGY’s S2 Glass fiber. This collaboration has produced a high-performance thermoplastic compound tailored to meet demanding requirements in industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, and medical devices.

The S2 Glass-reinforced PA12 offers significant performance enhancements, including a 15% increase in tensile strength, over 13% improvement in tensile and flexural modulus, more than 23% greater elongation at break, and at least 25% enhanced impact strength. Additionally, the material allows for the production of transparent or translucent parts, expanding its versatility for applications requiring both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

This co-development addresses the rising demand for advanced thermoplastic compounds that combine strength, toughness, and processing flexibility. The material’s unique properties make it suitable for designing components that meet stringent performance standards while offering distinctive visual characteristics.

“The material will enable customers to design parts with both high performance and distinctive visual properties,” said Ryan Divens, director of business development for Orion Compounding.

The partnership leverages AGY’s expertise in high-strength glass fiber technology and Orion’s capabilities in custom-engineered thermoplastic compounds. By integrating S2 Glass into PA12, the collaboration delivers a product that enhances durability and performance, catering to industries where reliability and precision are critical.

The development aligns with market trends seeking lightweight yet robust materials for complex applications. In aerospace, the compound can support structural components, while in automotive, it may contribute to lighter, more durable parts. Electronics and medical device sectors benefit from its strength and ability to produce visually appealing, functional components.

This innovation reflects the commitment of both companies to advance material science and meet evolving industry needs. The S2 Glass-reinforced PA12 positions AGY and Orion as leaders in providing solutions that balance performance with design flexibility, fostering opportunities for manufacturers to create cutting-edge products.

The collaboration strengthens the U.S. manufacturing landscape by combining local expertise to produce a globally competitive material. As demand for high-performance thermoplastics grows, this partnership sets a foundation for future advancements, supporting industries in achieving efficiency and innovation in their product designs.
