Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 13, Danish architecture firm Henning Larsen has been selected to design Centralbadet, a 51,850-square-meter swimming and sports facility in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city. Commissioned by the City of Gothenburg, the project was awarded following a design competition where Henning Larsen’s proposal outperformed entries from firms such as Bjarke Ingels Group and Wingårdh Arkitektkontor.
The Centralbadet complex will feature Olympic-sized pools, training pools, sports halls, a gym, saunas, terraces, cafés, and communal spaces. Designed with a timber structure, the building integrates harmoniously with surrounding parks and the broader urban landscape. Its roofscape extends to outdoor areas, incorporating warm-up zones, running tracks, outdoor gyms, and terraces. The façade utilizes recycled bricks and timber components, designed for disassembly and reuse to promote sustainability.
Henning Larsen collaborated with Winell & Jern Architects, engineering firm Ramboll, and John Dohlsten, a sports science lecturer at the University of Gothenburg, to develop the winning design. The project emphasizes functionality and environmental responsibility, aligning with Gothenburg’s vision for innovative urban development.
A spokesperson for Henning Larsen stated: “Centralbadet will be a vibrant hub for sports and community life, blending seamlessly with Gothenburg’s natural and urban environment. We’re honored to contribute to this forward-thinking project.”
Scheduled for development in Gothenburg, the facility is set to become a key recreational and social space, with construction timelines to be announced by the city. The design reflects a commitment to creating a sustainable, multifunctional venue that enhances the city’s public spaces.
