Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 14, Construction has started on a new suspension bridge spanning the Richmond River in Casino, located in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. The project aims to enhance connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, linking Casino’s central business district with Queen Elizabeth Park.
The initiative is receiving both state and national funding.
The initiative is supported by a A$3.51 million ($2.28 million) grant from the Community Local Infrastructure Recovery Package, part of the 2022 Community Assets Program, funded jointly by the Australian and New South Wales governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. The construction contract has been awarded to Forge Outdoors, formerly known as Fleetwood Urban.
This bridge forms a key component of the Casino CBD Activation Project, which seeks to integrate retail, residential, and community areas with local sporting facilities and scenic river walks. The new structure replaces the previous Casino Footbridge, which suffered repeated damage from flooding. The updated design and relocated site prioritize resilience, with the bridge elevated above flood levels and engineered to withstand strong river currents, ensuring safe and reliable access during adverse weather.
Australia’s Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, Kristy McBain, stated: “The new suspension bridge in Casino will provide a safe, accessible connection between key recreational spaces and the town centre, helping locals stay connected and active.”
Richmond Valley Council mayor Robert Mustow emphasized the bridge’s significance, saying: “The new bridge was identified in the Casino Place Plan as an important way of connecting the community to the CBD, sports fields, and the river. We would like to thank the Australian and NSW governments for this vital piece of work that allows this connection to remain following flooding and weather events.”
NSW legislative council member Emily Suvaal highlighted additional benefits, noting: “The suspension bridge will connect local communities and visitors across the Richmond River. It will also provide a great boost to local jobs during construction and ongoing through the tourism opportunities it will present.”
The project is expected to be completed by June 2026, subject to weather conditions. The bridge is anticipated to strengthen community ties, support local economies, and enhance access to recreational and commercial spaces in Casino.
