Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 17, Western Australia (WA) reported a 25.1% increase in new home completions, totaling 22,602 for the 2024-25 financial year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Released on Thursday, this figure marks the highest in eight years and the strongest growth among Australian states, contrasting with a national 2% decline in new home construction.
According to the data, the number of new homes built across Australia on a national scale fell by 2% during the period.
By June 30, 2025, WA had 23,063 homes under construction, with 6,088 commencements recorded in the June quarter, up 11.5%. Building approvals also rose, reaching 23,130 for the year to August, reflecting sustained growth in housing supply.
“Western Australia’s growing population means our State has a very high demand for housing. That’s why it’s really pleasing to see an uplift in building completions in the year to June, getting us closer to our target set with the Commonwealth Government to build 25,000 homes a year. The capacity of our housing construction industry is increasing, and with our growing workforce and more land supply coming online, it’s really encouraging to see this uplift in completions,” said WA Premier Roger Cook.
The construction workforce in WA averaged over 155,000 workers for the year to August 2025, approaching the record set earlier in the year. Government initiatives, including infrastructure funding, planning reforms, increased investment in social and affordable housing, rental housing incentives, and workforce expansion, are driving these results.
“Western Australia is leading the nation in housing completions with the number of new homes built in the last financial year reaching the highest levels seen in eight years. Our government is focused on ensuring every Western Australian has access to a quality home and this data shows our efforts are working,” said WA Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti.
The state recently launched the A$210 million ($140.7 million) Urban Connect Shared Equity scheme to support purchases of new apartments and townhouses, aiming to boost homeownership and housing availability. These efforts align with WA’s goal to address housing demand fueled by population growth.
The robust increase in completions and ongoing projects positions WA as a leader in addressing housing needs, supporting both economic development and community welfare. The government’s multifaceted approach, combining workforce growth, land availability, and financial incentives, continues to strengthen the state’s housing sector, ensuring more residents have access to quality homes.
