Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 19, The construction of Rome's Metro Line C continues to progress, with the second phase of the Venezia Station project now underway. This follows the completion of the first phase, which involved the installation of diaphragm walls, internal slabs, and archaeological excavations. The Metro C project, managed by the Metro C consortium led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori on behalf of Roma Metropolitane, is one of the most complex and significant projects in the historic center of Rome.

The first phase, which began in June 2023, focused on utility relocation and measures to protect Rome's historic sites. The work included constructing 124 diaphragm walls (91 permanent and 33 cross walls), some as deep as 85 meters and 1.5 meters thick, along with 18 additional walls for a fire shaft on Via dei Fori Imperiali. A total of 35,000 cubic meters were excavated, 35,000 cubic meters of concrete poured, and 4,700 tons of steel used in the process. Over 1,500 monitoring instruments were installed on nearby historic buildings, including the Basilica Ulpia, Trajan’s Forum, and Palazzo Bonaparte, to ensure their protection.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered significant Roman and medieval structures, including parts of the ancient Via Flaminia and residential complexes linked to multi-story buildings from centuries past. These findings are being studied under the supervision of the Special Superintendency of Rome.

The second phase of the project will focus on soil consolidation and the completion of the station box with additional diaphragm walls. This phase will also involve a new round of archaeological excavations, digging 4-5 meters below the ground. Meanwhile, a shaft will be excavated on Via dei Fori Imperiali as part of the works.

As part of Metro Line C, Webuild has already constructed two new archaeo-stations, Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali, both set to open in December 2025. When fully completed, Metro Line C will span 29 kilometers with 31 stations, including the future T1 section currently in design.

Additionally, the Metro C consortium is working on Section T2, a 4-kilometer stretch that will connect Venezia and Clodio/Mazzini stations, passing under the Tiber River. This section will include four stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano (with an interchange to Line A), and Clodio/Mazzini. Both Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro will be designed as archaeo-stations to preserve and showcase the historical significance of the area.

The project continues to push forward, enhancing the transport infrastructure of Rome while preserving its rich historical heritage.
