Wedoany.com Report-Dec.2, Sulzer Ltd., headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland, has joined the Swiss Association for the Decarbonization of Industry (VZDI) in a pioneering methane pyrolysis initiative. The association officially commissioned a demonstration plant at the production facility of V-ZUG, a leading Swiss household appliance manufacturer and VZDI member, located in Zug.
The facility employs an innovative methane pyrolysis process that uses microwave-generated plasma to split methane (CH₄) into hydrogen (H₂) and solid carbon. Unlike conventional methane combustion, this method produces energy without releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The solid carbon by-product can be reused as a valuable material in sectors such as construction and agriculture.
Sulzer contributed its process engineering expertise, particularly in the purification of the carbon output. The company identifies future applications for the carbon in wastewater treatment, a key area of its water technology business, as well as potential integration into its own industrial operations.
Michael Schüepp, Head of Ventures at Sulzer, stated: “This unique Swiss collaboration demonstrates that even processes traditionally considered difficult to decarbonize can be made more sustainable. Developing sustainable solutions requires innovation and perseverance—qualities that inspire us to continue championing the association’s efforts.”
The project brings together 16 industrial partners, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), and receives support from the Canton of Zug. The initiative also serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and the advancement of additional decarbonisation technologies, including carbon capture systems.
Cantonal Councilor Silvia Thalmann-Gut highlighted the significance of the cooperation: “From a cantonal perspective, we are pleased to see industrial and scientific partners join forces. This facility demonstrates the potential of such collaboration. I am convinced that this is the right path toward achieving our goal of a net-zero industry.”
The methane pyrolysis demonstration represents a practical step toward CO₂-neutral energy use in energy-intensive industries while creating a marketable carbon product. Sulzer views participation in VZDI as an important channel for cross-sector learning and the development of scalable low-emission technologies applicable both within Switzerland and internationally.
