Wedoany.com Report-Dec.4, The UK Government has announced an additional £7.3 billion in funding for local road maintenance across England. The package aims to address widespread issues, particularly potholes, that have affected road quality in recent years.
Road maintenance funding will help improve roads in the UK
The new allocation will be distributed to local authorities over two periods: 2026–2027 and 2029–2030. This multi-year structure provides councils with greater certainty for planning and delivering effective resurfacing and repair programmes.
To qualify for the funding, local authorities must demonstrate adherence to recognised best-practice standards in highway maintenance. The requirement is designed to ensure that repairs are carried out efficiently and deliver long-lasting improvements to road surfaces.
The investment responds to concerns about deteriorating local road conditions, which have been linked to previous constraints on maintenance budgets. By increasing available resources and introducing clear performance expectations, the government seeks to raise the overall standard of England’s local road network and improve safety and reliability for all road users.
The funding forms part of a broader commitment to upgrade transport infrastructure and will enable councils to tackle backlogs of essential repairs while adopting more systematic approaches to future maintenance.
