Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 10, Neste, a top global producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), has begun SAF production at its renewable products refinery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The facility, recently adapted for this purpose, can now produce up to 500,000 tons of SAF annually. This addition boosts Neste’s worldwide SAF production capacity to 1.5 million tons, equivalent to about 1.875 billion liters per year.

Heikki Malinen, President and CEO of Neste, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability, stating: “It is clear that we need to continue making progress in mitigating climate change and addressing aviation’s climate impact. Neste is fully committed to supporting its customers in the aviation industry to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and this milestone underlines that commitment.” He added: “Our SAF production capability, now also in Rotterdam, enables us to significantly contribute to the implementation of the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation and similar SAF mandates. Policies like these are crucial to ramping-up SAF production and usage, and we need to keep our ambitions and targets high. At the same time it requires support and close cooperation across the whole aviation ecosystem to accelerate the energy transition and related emission reductions.”

Neste is also advancing its broader renewable fuels strategy. Beyond the recent upgrades, the company is undertaking a major expansion project at the Rotterdam refinery. This initiative, set for completion in 2027, will more than double the site’s renewable products capacity to 2.7 million tons annually, making it the world’s largest facility for renewable diesel and SAF. With this growth, Neste’s total global renewable fuels production will reach 6.8 million tons per year, including an SAF capacity of 2.2 million tons. Alongside Rotterdam, Neste operates SAF production facilities in Singapore and Porvoo, Finland.

The Rotterdam milestone strengthens Neste’s role in supporting the aviation sector’s shift to lower-emission fuels, aligning with industry-wide efforts to meet sustainability goals through increased SAF availability.
