Wedoany.com Report-May 10, Germany remains Europe’s leading biodiesel producer, with the Association of the German Biofuels Industry (VDB) reporting a total output of approximately 3.6 million tonnes in 2024. This marks a 100,000-tonne increase compared to the previous year, reflecting steady growth in the sector.
Rapeseed oil is the primary raw material, accounting for 53.1% of biodiesel production in 2024. Waste cooking oils contribute 24.1%, followed by soybeans at 15%. Animal fats, included as a feedstock since 2021, make up 2% of production. Notably, palm oil is no longer used in German biodiesel production, as it has been excluded from greenhouse gas emissions calculations since 2023.
The German Association for the Promotion of Oilseed and Grain Cultivation (UFOP) estimates that 1.45 million tonnes of rapeseed oil were processed into biodiesel in 2024, aligning closely with the year’s rapeseed harvest. This positions the biodiesel industry as the largest consumer of domestically grown rapeseed, highlighting its role in Germany’s agricultural economy.
The biodiesel sector also supports the production of 2.2 million tonnes of rapeseed meal, a key non-GMO protein source for livestock feed. This integrated approach exemplifies a sustainable bioeconomy, with potential future applications for rapeseed oil and methyl esters in the chemical industry. The UFOP emphasizes the market potential of this interconnected system, which balances fuel and feed production.
Despite global trends indicating a decline in biodiesel and hydrotreated vegetable oil production in 2024 due to reduced profitability, Germany’s biodiesel industry has maintained growth. Analysts note that the cost difference between various oils is a significant factor affecting biodiesel production worldwide, potentially leading to reduced output in other countries. However, Germany’s focus on rapeseed and waste oils has sustained its position as a leader in the European market.
The VDB highlights the industry’s adaptability, with ongoing efforts to optimize raw material use and explore new applications. By prioritizing locally sourced rapeseed and excluding less sustainable options like palm oil, Germany’s biodiesel sector continues to align with environmental goals while meeting domestic and regional demand.
This achievement underscores Germany’s commitment to sustainable energy and agriculture. The biodiesel industry not only supports renewable fuel production but also strengthens the agricultural supply chain, providing economic and environmental benefits through efficient resource use and innovative practices.
