Wedoany.com Report-May 27, Woodfibre LNG, a subsidiary of Pacific Energy under the Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) group, is developing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in British Columbia, aiming to be the world’s first net zero LNG export facility. The project seeks to achieve net zero emissions during both construction and operations, setting a new standard for sustainable natural gas exports.

The facility employs advanced technologies and nature-based carbon offsets to minimize environmental impact. By integrating low-emission systems and renewable energy, Woodfibre LNG aims to produce LNG with a carbon intensity of 0.04 tonnes of CO2 per tonne, significantly below the global industry average. A key feature is the E-Drive system, which uses electric compressors powered by renewable hydroelectricity, reducing over 230,000 tonnes of CO2e annually—equivalent to removing 70,000 cars from the road.

Additional measures include re-liquefying boil-off gas to prevent atmospheric release, saving over 11,000 tonnes of CO2e yearly, and using air-cooling systems, aligned with the Squamish Nation Environmental Assessment Agreement, which cuts an additional 3,000 tonnes of CO2e annually. To offset remaining emissions, Woodfibre LNG will invest in locally developed, nature-based carbon offset projects, such as forest conservation initiatives with First Nations partners, which support carbon-absorbing ecosystems.

Ratnesh Bedi, President of Pacific Energy, stated: “Achieving net zero emissions means balancing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted with those removed or offset. At Woodfibre LNG, this balance is not theoretical, it’s operational. By integrating advanced emissions-reduction technologies with robust offset strategies, the facility aims to produce LNG with one of the lowest carbon intensities in the world. We are not waiting for the future – we are building it now.” He added: “Woodfibre LNG’s approach demonstrates that net zero is not just a future goal. It’s achievable today with the right combination of innovation, collaboration and accountability.”

Brightspot Climate validates all emissions data and offset projects, ensuring compliance with British Columbia’s strict regulatory standards and transparency in reporting. The project reflects a commitment to balancing global energy demands with environmental responsibility, contributing to a low-carbon economy while maintaining safety and performance.

The Woodfibre LNG facility represents a milestone in sustainable energy production, demonstrating that LNG exports can align with environmental goals through innovative technology and partnerships. By leveraging renewable energy and local conservation efforts, the project sets a precedent for responsible resource development in the global LNG industry.
