Wedoany.com Report-Jun 4, China Southern Power Grid (CSG) launched the Baochi Energy Storage Station in Wenshan, Yunnan province, on May 26, 2025. This national pilot project is China’s first large-scale energy storage facility combining lithium and sodium-ion batteries and the world’s first to feature a grid-forming sodium-ion battery system.

The Baochi plant, covering 34,000 square meters, represents an investment of over CNY 460 million ($63.8 million). It has an installed capacity of 200MW/400MWh and operates on a dual daily charge-discharge cycle, capable of regulating up to 580 GWh annually. This output can meet the electricity needs of approximately 270,000 households, with 98% of its energy derived from renewable sources. The facility supports over 30 local wind and solar power stations, stabilizing intermittent renewable energy supply and enhancing grid integration of clean energy.

Li Wei, project director at CSG, stated: “The Baochi Energy Storage Station is a significant step forward in advancing renewable energy integration. By leveraging innovative hybrid battery technology, we are ensuring a stable and sustainable energy supply for the region.”

The plant’s use of sodium-ion batteries, alongside lithium-ion, marks a breakthrough in energy storage technology, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution. Its grid-forming capability enables the facility to maintain grid stability, addressing challenges associated with fluctuating renewable energy inputs. This innovation supports the broader adoption of wind and solar power in Yunnan, a region rich in renewable resources.

The Baochi station plays a vital role in optimizing energy distribution, reducing reliance on non-renewable sources, and promoting sustainable development. By facilitating the connection of multiple renewable energy projects to the grid, it enhances the reliability and efficiency of the local power network.

CSG’s investment in the Baochi project underscores its commitment to pioneering advanced energy storage solutions and supporting national goals for clean energy expansion. The facility sets a benchmark for hybrid energy storage systems, contributing to the global transition toward sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure.
