Wedoany.com Report-Jun 8, The city of Jelenia Góra in southwestern Poland has advanced its geothermal development plans by initiating the bidding process for the Cieplice C-3 exploration and appraisal borehole. Located in the historic spa district of Cieplice, known for its thermal waters, the planned 2,500-meter well aims to evaluate the area’s geothermal potential for heating and future development.

Two companies submitted bids for the project. Algeo sp. z o.o., based in Grabownica Starzenska, offered PLN 19.45 million (approximately EUR 4.48 million), while UOS Drilling S.A. proposed PLN 26.58 million (approximately EUR 6.12 million). The project encompasses site preparation, drilling, geophysical and hydrogeological studies, and post-drilling site restoration to ensure minimal environmental impact.
Jelenia Góra has allocated a total budget of PLN 23.76 million (approximately EUR 5.48 million) for the initiative. Funding includes PLN 18.79 million (approximately EUR 4.34 million) from Poland’s National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, with the municipality covering the remaining costs. The geothermal waters are expected to provide heating for parts of Cieplice and the nearby Sobieszów area, supporting sustainable energy use.
Beyond heating, the city is exploring the development of a tourist and recreation center on 14 hectares of adjacent municipal land, leveraging Cieplice’s centuries-old geothermal heritage. The area’s thermal springs, documented since the 13th century, have historically drawn notable visitors, including Queen Marysie?ka Sobieska in the 17th century, due to their therapeutic qualities.
A city official stated: “This project marks a significant step in harnessing Cieplice’s geothermal resources to provide sustainable heating and foster local development opportunities.”
The initiative reflects Jelenia Góra’s commitment to utilizing its natural resources for modern energy solutions while preserving its historical legacy. The geothermal project is poised to enhance the region’s sustainability and attract further interest in its spa district.
