Wedoany.com Report-Jun 10, SP Energy Networks has completed a £8.4 million upgrade of the Kilmarnock Town substation in East Ayrshire, Scotland, enhancing its capacity and reliability. The project, finalized in 2025 after starting in March 2023, supports the UK’s growing electricity demand, projected to double by 2050, by facilitating the integration of locally generated renewable energy into the national grid.

The upgrade involved replacing two outdated transformers and modernizing critical equipment, including switching gear and circuit breakers, to extend the substation’s operational life. These improvements enable the facility to handle increased energy loads, ensuring a stable power supply for homes and businesses in Kilmarnock and nearby areas.

The investment aligns with the UK’s goals of achieving a clean power system by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050. By enhancing the transmission network, the project supports economic growth and energy security while promoting the use of green electricity across the country.

Jason Mcinally, project manager at SP Energy Networks, stated: “With the completion of our Kilmarnock Town substation upgrade project, we’re improving the reliability of the power supply for homes and businesses in Kilmarnock and surrounding areas. Kilmarnock is now better equipped than ever to meet the demands of a low-carbon future. For decades to come the region will play a key role in renewable energy generation, helping more people across the UK to access clean, green, secure energy. I’d like to thank our hard-working team and contractors who helped make this transformation happen and all with minimal disruption to the local community throughout.”

The upgraded substation strengthens Kilmarnock’s role in Scotland’s renewable energy landscape, ensuring efficient transmission of green power and contributing to sustainable energy objectives with minimal impact on the local community during construction.
