Wedoany.com Report-Jun 28, Siemens Gamesa, a global wind turbine manufacturer, has finalized an agreement with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to collaborate on offshore wind power development. Signed in Tokyo, the deal establishes a public-private partnership to create a local supply chain for offshore wind energy in Japan.
Japan currently lacks domestic wind turbine manufacturers, and the agreement aims to foster partnerships with international companies like Siemens Gamesa to build a robust supply network. A METI official stated: “The goal is to promote collaborations with global players to create a domestic supply network.” This supports Japan’s strategy to expand offshore wind, a key component of its renewable energy goals, despite reliance on imported equipment.
Siemens Gamesa also signed a memorandum of understanding with TDK, a Japanese electronic parts manufacturer, to supply magnets for its wind turbines, enhancing local production capabilities. Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business, said: “We are bringing the newest technology to new markets, hence we are in Japan. We are also continuously expanding our supply chain, and hence we’re coming to Japan to work together with TDK on producing magnets.”
Earlier this month, METI entered a similar agreement with GE Vernova, focusing on cooperation in wind power, hydrogen, and other renewable energy sectors. These efforts underscore Japan’s commitment to scaling up offshore wind capacity, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, and advancing sustainable energy development.
The collaboration between Siemens Gamesa and METI marks a significant step toward localizing offshore wind production, driving innovation, and supporting Japan’s clean energy transition.
