Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 28, Nokia, a global leader in telecommunications, has introduced a new 5G radio solution to enhance railway communications worldwide, supporting the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). Announced on August 28, 2025, the solution aims to deliver high-capacity, reliable, and real-time connectivity for rail operators, fostering smarter, safer, and more efficient rail networks.

The solution includes the industry’s first commercial 5G radio for the 1900 MHz (n101) band and Nokia’s Core Enterprise Solution for Railways, designed to accelerate the digital transformation of the rail sector. It supports the transition from the current 2G Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway (GSM-R) to FRMCS, the next-generation global standard for railways. FRMCS enables enhanced automation, improved passenger services, and secure cross-border communication with built-in security and reliability.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, stated: “The drive toward digitalization demands the kind of high-speed connectivity and data capabilities that legacy systems simply can’t provide, creating an urgent need for rail operators worldwide to modernize. Our commercial 5G solution, backed by decades of proven rail industry expertise, reflects our commitment to laying the foundation for the next generation of railway operations.”

The 5G solution supports automated train operations, real-time passenger information systems, mission-critical voice communication, and smart rail maintenance, reducing energy consumption, emissions, and operational costs while enhancing safety and passenger experience. It integrates seamlessly with legacy systems like GSM-R, ensuring a smooth transition. The cloud-native 5G standalone core supports scalable deployments for regional and national networks.

Nokia’s solution will be tested under the EU-funded FP2-MORANE-2 project, building on prior FRMCS initiatives to advance rail digitalization in Europe. With experience in GSM-R deployments across more than 20 countries, Nokia collaborates with rail operators, governments, and industry bodies to shape and deploy FRMCS globally.

The solution features Nokia’s AirScale portfolio and mission-critical IP, optical, and data center networking products, adhering to high cybersecurity standards. It supports diverse applications, from real-time train control to predictive maintenance, aligning with the operational needs of modern railways, particularly for cross-border scenarios.

This launch positions Nokia to drive the digital transformation of the railway sector, enhancing connectivity and efficiency. The solution supports sustainable rail operations and economic growth by improving infrastructure management and passenger services across global markets.
