Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 28, Finland’s Renewable Energy Agency has reported that more than 100 gigawatts (GW) of wind power projects are planned across the country, as announced on August 28, 2025. The pipeline includes 60.8 GW of onshore wind and 45.8 GW of offshore wind, though only a portion of these projects is expected to be developed. Currently, Finland has 8.9 GW of operational wind capacity, with 5.2 GW either permitted or under construction and 8.2 GW in the planning stage. For offshore wind, 860 MW has been approved in territorial waters.

The agency highlighted wind power’s role in supporting Finland’s renewable energy goals and driving economic growth. Wind projects are expected to facilitate large-scale industrial investments and provide economic benefits to municipalities. However, a proposed fixed-distance requirement in the Land Use Act could hinder project development, raising concerns within the industry.

Anni Mikkonen, Chief Executive of Finnish Renewables, stated: “The planned land use law threatens to stymie a large part of Finland’s wind power projects in a confusing way. Wind power is currently the only way to quickly increase domestic renewable electricity production, which is a prerequisite for, for example, the hydrogen economy and the electrification of other sectors – i.e. growth investments and new jobs.” This underscores the importance of wind energy for Finland’s sustainable development and economic opportunities.

Matias Ollila, Finnish Renewables Advocacy Director, added: “If the prerequisites for wind power construction are destroyed now, in the worst case scenario, project operators will withdraw from the market and any possible return will take time and the projects will become obsolete.” The industry is urging careful consideration of regulatory changes to ensure continued progress in wind power development.
