Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 28, Swedish hydrogen technology provider Metacon AB has delivered ten 5MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser stacks, manufactured in collaboration with Chinese partner PERIC, to Motor Oil Hellas for its Corinth refinery in Greece. Each stack, weighing approximately 60 tonnes, forms the backbone of the first 50MW phase of a major decarbonisation project, supporting Greece’s growing hydrogen economy.
Motor Oil Hellas has paid €14.9 million for the electrolysis stacks, which are a key component of the contract. Additional balance-of-plant equipment and integration work are still to be delivered. Once operational, the electrolysers will produce zero-carbon hydrogen by splitting water, supplying the refinery’s processes and potentially supporting mobility and industrial applications in the future.
Metacon described the delivery as a “flagship project,” highlighting its role in advancing large-scale industrial hydrogen solutions in Europe. By partnering with PERIC for stack production while overseeing integration in Europe, Metacon aims to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. A company representative stated: “This project marks a significant step in our ambition to lead in industrial hydrogen delivery, combining reliable manufacturing with seamless integration to meet the needs of major energy projects.”
For Motor Oil Hellas, the initiative is a critical step toward integrating hydrogen into its refining operations, aligning with Greece’s clean energy goals. The Corinth refinery project is expected to set a precedent for expanding hydrogen capacity, supporting sustainable fuel production and reducing carbon emissions in industrial processes.
The collaboration leverages PERIC’s manufacturing expertise and Metacon’s integration capabilities, ensuring reliable and scalable hydrogen production. The project supports Greece’s efforts to transition to cleaner energy, contributing to both environmental sustainability and economic growth in the region. The 50MW phase is a foundation for future expansions, positioning the Corinth refinery as a leader in hydrogen-based decarbonisation.
This delivery strengthens Metacon’s presence in Europe’s hydrogen market, demonstrating its ability to deliver large-scale solutions for industrial clients. The project also highlights Greece’s commitment to advancing clean energy infrastructure, fostering innovation, and supporting the broader adoption of hydrogen technologies in refining and beyond.
