Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 28, The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $233.1 million loan to Uzbekistan to upgrade a vital section of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Road Corridor 2. The project, announced by the Manila-based bank, focuses on enhancing regional connectivity, reducing travel times, and improving road safety and climate resilience in western Uzbekistan.

The initiative aims to modernize infrastructure to support efficient and sustainable transportation. By incorporating climate-resilient designs and intelligent transport systems, the project will enhance mobility for communities and businesses. Kanokpan Lao-Araya, ADB Country Director for Uzbekistan, stated: “By integrating climate-resilient infrastructure and intelligent transport systems, the project will ensure long-term sustainability and deliver safer and more efficient mobility for communities and businesses.”

The upgraded road segment will facilitate smoother travel and trade, strengthening Uzbekistan’s role in regional connectivity. The project prioritizes safety features and environmental considerations, ensuring infrastructure withstands climate challenges while supporting economic activity. This aligns with the ADB’s commitment to fostering sustainable development across Central Asia.

Since Uzbekistan became a member of the ADB in 1995, the bank has provided approximately $14.3 billion in public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance to the country. This latest investment builds on that legacy, supporting Uzbekistan’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and enhance economic growth.

The project is expected to reduce travel times, improve access to markets, and create opportunities for businesses in western Uzbekistan. By strengthening the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Road Corridor 2, the initiative will support regional trade and connectivity, benefiting both local communities and broader economic networks.

This loan reflects the ADB’s ongoing support for sustainable infrastructure development in Uzbekistan, promoting economic integration and environmental resilience. The project’s focus on intelligent transport systems and climate-adaptive designs positions Uzbekistan to meet growing transportation demands while addressing long-term sustainability goals.
