Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 1, Dongfang Electric, a Chinese state-owned manufacturer, has installed a 26-megawatt offshore wind turbine at a testing and certification base, surpassing Siemens Gamesa’s 21.5-megawatt turbine in Denmark to become the world’s most powerful. This milestone marks a significant advancement in renewable energy technology.
The turbine, the largest in both capacity and size, features a blade wheel diameter exceeding 310 meters (1,107 feet) and a hub height of 185 meters (607 feet). Dongfang Electric recently shipped the turbine’s nacelle, the heaviest of its kind, along with three blades. Designed for areas with wind speeds of 8 meters per second or higher, the turbine ensures robust performance in challenging offshore environments.
At an average wind speed of 10 meters per second, one turbine can produce 100 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power about 55,000 households. This output reduces standard coal consumption by 30,000 tons and carbon dioxide emissions by 80,000 tons each year. The turbine is engineered to withstand winds up to 200 kilometers per hour, equivalent to level 17 on the extended Beaufort scale. A company spokesperson stated: “This turbine represents a significant advancement in renewable energy technology, showcasing our commitment to sustainable energy solutions.”
Earlier this year, Dongfang Electric completed static load testing on the turbine’s blades. The prototype is now undergoing fatigue testing, a process expected to last up to a year before full certification. This rigorous testing ensures the turbine’s reliability and efficiency for future deployments.
The turbine’s installation highlights progress in offshore wind energy, supporting efforts to reduce fossil fuel reliance and address environmental goals. Its design enhances durability, making it suitable for widespread use in high-wind regions. Dongfang Electric’s achievement strengthens its role in the global renewable energy market, setting a new benchmark for turbine capacity.
The project aligns with objectives to expand clean energy infrastructure. By generating substantial electricity, the turbine contributes to energy security and sustainability. As testing continues, Dongfang Electric aims to finalize certification, enabling broader adoption of this advanced technology.
This development underscores the company’s focus on innovation and its capacity to deliver large-scale renewable energy solutions. The turbine’s potential to power thousands of homes positions it as a key asset in advancing sustainable energy systems globally.
