Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 1, The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has reissued a final order authorizing Glenfarne Energy Transition’s subsidiary to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in South Texas. The approval, finalized three months ahead of schedule, includes a timeline for completing construction by November 2029.

The Texas LNG facility, located at the Port of Brownsville, will have a capacity of 4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). Glenfarne describes the project as “green by design,” utilizing renewable energy to power its electric motors, aiming to make it one of the lowest-emitting LNG facilities worldwide. Brendan Duval, Glenfarne’s Chief Executive Officer and Founder, stated: “Texas LNG is rapidly advancing toward a targeted year-end Final Investment Decision, and the re-issued FERC authorization, finalized three months ahead of schedule, greatly accelerates our momentum through the second half of the year.”

Initially authorized in 2019 and reauthorized in 2023, the project faced a setback when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit revoked the reauthorizations for Texas LNG and another project due to environmental concerns. The recent FERC approval addresses these issues, enabling Glenfarne to move forward with its plans. The company has selected Kiewit for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the facility under a lump-sum turnkey contract signed in November.

Throughout 2024, Glenfarne secured several LNG supply agreements for the facility. These include deals with EQT for 0.5 mtpa in January and 1.5 mtpa in April, Gunvor for 0.5 mtpa in March, Macquarie Group for 0.5 mtpa in July, and an undisclosed global LNG player in September. These agreements strengthen the project’s commercial viability as it approaches a final investment decision by year-end.

The Texas LNG facility is expected to contribute to the region’s energy infrastructure while prioritizing environmental sustainability. By leveraging renewable energy, the project aims to minimize emissions, aligning with global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of energy production. The early FERC approval enhances Glenfarne’s ability to meet its construction timeline and operational goals.

This milestone reflects Glenfarne’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions in South Texas. The project is poised to create economic benefits, including job opportunities during construction, while supporting the growing demand for cleaner LNG. As Glenfarne progresses toward its final investment decision, the Texas LNG facility positions the company as a key player in the global energy transition.
