Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 1, A consortium led by Spain’s Acciona, in partnership with Amico and Alberici, has been awarded a contract by Ontario’s transport authority, Metrolinx, to design and construct the westward extension of Toronto’s Line 5 Eglinton. The project involves building a 9.2-kilometer light rail line from Mount Dennis Station to Renforth Drive, enhancing connectivity in the Greater Toronto Area.

The scope of work, managed by the consortium under the name Trillium Rail Partners, includes constructing tracks, electrification, communication systems, signaling, train control systems, and fitting out tunnels and elevated guideways, as well as tunnel ventilation. The extension will feature seven new stations, four of which will be underground, integrating with the existing Mount Dennis Station.

Canada’s WSP, appointed as the primary lead designer, will oversee the project’s design phase. Corina Moore, WSP Canada’s Executive Vice President of Transportation and Infrastructure, stated: “The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is a vital east-west transit connector for Toronto, one that will significantly reduce commuting times for people throughout the city. We are proud to be part of a project that, once complete, will make it easier for thousands of people in the Greater Toronto Area to get to the places and people they value most.”

The extension is expected to significantly improve public transit by reducing commuting times and easing traffic congestion. Ontario transportation authorities project that the completed Line 5 will eliminate approximately 6.5 million vehicle trips annually, contributing to more sustainable urban mobility.
