Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 3, In August 2025, U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports reached a historic high of 9.33 million metric tons, surpassing the previous record of 9.25 million tons set in April and exceeding July’s 9.1 million tons, according to preliminary LSEG data. The increase was driven by the completion of maintenance at LNG facilities and rising production from Venture Global’s Plaquemines plant in the U.S.

The Plaquemines facility, the second-largest LNG plant in the U.S. with a capacity of 27.2 million tons per annum, accounted for 1.6 million tons, or 17% of August’s exports. Operational since December 2024, the plant has boosted output monthly and is expected to reach full production from its 18 units in September 2025, potentially further elevating U.S. export volumes, per regulatory filings. This growth has solidified the U.S. position as the world’s leading LNG exporter.

Europe was the top destination for U.S. LNG, receiving 6.16 million tons, or 66% of total exports, up from 5.25 million tons (58%) in July, according to LSEG ship tracking data. Lower natural gas storage levels in Europe compared to 2024, combined with reduced Asian imports, supported strong demand. Gas prices at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility fell to $11.13 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) in August, down from $11.56 in July, per LSEG data.

Asia imported 1.47 million tons of U.S. LNG in August, down from 1.8 million tons in July, as the Japan Korea Marker price dropped to $11.63 per mmBtu from $12.18, according to LSEG. Egypt, addressing a decline in domestic natural gas production to 3,485 million standard cubic meters in April 2025 from a peak of 6,133 million in March 2021, imported 0.57 million tons (6% of U.S. exports) via nine cargoes, slightly down from 0.59 million tons in July.

U.S. LNG exports to Latin America decreased to 0.69 million tons (7% of total exports) in August, compared to 1.03 million tons in July. The region was supported by increased supply from Trinidad and Tobago, where the Shell and BP-owned Atlantic LNG plant exported 0.8 million tons. Shell’s LNG Canada plant in Kitimat exported 0.4 million tons from its Train 1, up from 0.3 million tons in July. Additionally, 0.37 million tons (4%) of U.S. LNG exports were shipped without fixed destinations, indicating availability for market demand, per LSEG data.
