Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 7, Adani Power, a leading private-sector thermal power generator in India, has secured a letter of award to develop a 2,400MW greenfield ultra-supercritical power plant in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur district, Bihar. The company will supply electricity under a 25-year contract with the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL), signed on behalf of South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) and North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL).

The Indian government has planned for an additional thermal capacity of 100GW by 2035 to meet rising power requirements.

In August 2025, Adani Power received a letter of intent from BSPGCL, with the next step being the signing of a power supply agreement. The project, secured through a competitive bidding process with a tariff of 6.075 rupees ($0.069) per kilowatt-hour, involves a $3 billion investment for the plant and related infrastructure. It is expected to create 10,000 to 12,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and 3,000 jobs once operational.

Adani Power CEO SB Khyalia stated: “Adani Power, as India’s largest private sector thermal power producer, has consistently demonstrated the capability to deliver dependable capacity at scale. With our upcoming ultra-supercritical, high-efficiency Pirpainti project in Bihar, we are setting new benchmarks in operational excellence and sustainability. This plant will provide affordable and uninterrupted power to the people of Bihar, catalysing industrialisation, strengthening the state’s economy and supporting the prosperity of its people.”

India’s power demand is projected to grow significantly, with peak requirements expected to rise from 250GW to around 400GW by 2031-32 and exceed 700GW by 2047, driven by rapid industrialization, urbanization, and population growth. Thermal power remains essential for energy security, providing stable base-load and grid-balancing support. The Indian government plans to add 100GW of thermal capacity by 2035 to meet these needs.

The Pirpainti plant, utilizing ultra-supercritical technology, aims to deliver efficient and reliable electricity while supporting Bihar’s economic development. Adani Power’s commitment to this project underscores its role in advancing India’s energy infrastructure and ensuring a sustainable power supply for the region.
