Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 7, Germany’s electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) and select distribution system operators (DSOs) are experiencing a significant increase in grid connection requests for large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). In February 2025, pv magazine reported that four TSOs and three DSOs—Edis, Westnetz, and Mitnetz—were handling over 340 GW of such requests, signaling strong demand for battery storage integration.
The Regelleistung (Control Power) Online platform now estimates the total capacity of these requests at 470.5 GW across the same four TSOs and three DSOs, a figure that reflects only a portion of Germany’s 800 DSOs. This suggests the nationwide total likely exceeds 500 GW, indicating robust growth in battery storage interest. A spokesperson for the platform noted: “The total figure at this point is far exceeding 500 GW,” highlighting the scale of the trend.
This surge, often described as a “battery tsunami,” underscores Germany’s push to enhance grid reliability and support renewable energy integration. Battery storage systems are critical for balancing electricity supply and demand, particularly as the country expands its renewable energy capacity. The increased requests reflect growing investment in infrastructure to store excess power and release it during peak demand periods.
The involvement of only three DSOs in the reported data—Edis, Westnetz, and Mitnetz—suggests that the actual demand across all 800 DSOs could be significantly higher. These operators manage regional and local grid connections, complementing the TSOs’ role in overseeing high-voltage transmission networks. The rising volume of applications demonstrates the industry’s confidence in battery storage as a key component of Germany’s energy transition.
This development aligns with efforts to strengthen energy infrastructure, ensuring stability as renewable sources like wind and solar become more prevalent. The significant interest in BESS grid connections highlights Germany’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and its role as a leader in advancing clean energy technologies.
