Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 7, Virtus Data Centres has entered into a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) to source renewable energy from the Lynn and Inner Dowsing (LID) offshore wind farms in the UK. The deal will provide 31MW of wind power, equal to 16% of the total output from the two wind farms. The agreement will take effect on October 1, 2025.

The contract was established as a tri-party arrangement involving Virtus, energy advisory firm Inspired, and the LID wind farms. The latter are owned by funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management, which is supported by XceCo Ltd, a UK-based asset manager specialising in renewable energy projects across their full life cycle. The wind farms are located about 5km off the east coast of England near the town of Skegness in Lincolnshire.

David Cockshott, chief commercial officer at Inspired, commented: “Inspired has been proud to partner with Virtus as their dedicated energy consultant. We are excited to continue supporting their sustainable journey and to commence this tri-party agreement, which allows renewable power to flow directly to their data centres.”

Helen Kinsman, senior vice president of commercial and regulatory affairs at Virtus, noted that the company has sourced all of its power from renewable energy since opening its first facility in 2011. She said: “As an energy intensive user, we know it’s our responsibility to minimise the environmental impact from all our data centre facilities. We are committed to delivering reliable, resilient and responsible digital infrastructure to our customers and operate the gold standard in sustainable data centres in the UK and Europe.”

Bailey Bradley, managing director and co-founder of XceCo, also welcomed the deal. He said: “The successful delivery of this CPPA for one of our offshore wind farm assets under management stands as a testament to the exceptional collaboration between XceCo and all stakeholders involved in delivering this transaction. The commercial complexities involved in delivering this CPPA have proven to be a great experience. Through painstaking efforts, continuous multi-party engagements, a shared vision and unwavering commitment, we turned a complex challenge into a powerful achievement, generating success together.”

The agreement underscores the role of renewable power in supporting energy-intensive industries such as data centres, which require consistent and large-scale energy supplies. By partnering with Inspired, Macquarie Asset Management, and XceCo, Virtus has secured long-term renewable power that aligns with its sustainability objectives while reinforcing commitments to responsible operations in Europe’s digital infrastructure sector.

This CPPA also reflects the growing importance of offshore wind projects in the UK’s renewable energy portfolio, enabling both environmental benefits and stable power supplies for corporate users. For Virtus, the agreement demonstrates its ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable practices while ensuring reliability for its customers.
