Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 5, NKT has signed a contract with Danish transmission system operator Energinet to supply a high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cable system for the Bornholm Energy Island project in Denmark. The agreement, valued at about €650 million ($758 million), covers the design, manufacturing, and installation of cables across a 200km offshore route and a 16.8km onshore section.
NKT Eleonora will install the offshore cables.
The Bornholm Energy Island, located in the Baltic Sea, is being developed to integrate up to 3.8GW of offshore wind power from future wind farms. The project will transmit renewable energy to both Denmark and Germany through two HVDC offshore interconnector systems. NKT’s involvement will ensure the link between the energy island and the national grids of Denmark and Germany.
This contract follows NKT’s earlier agreement in 2023 with German transmission system operator 50Hertz, which also focused on connecting the Bornholm Energy Island to the German power grid.
NKT will produce the power cables at its factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, which operates entirely on renewable energy. Offshore installation will be performed by NKT Eleonora, a specialized vessel currently under construction and scheduled to begin service in 2027. The company stated that this project will not affect its financial outlook for 2025.
NKT president and CEO Claes Westerlind commented: “We are delighted and proud to continue the long-term collaboration with Energinet on this innovative and ambitious project strengthening the interconnection between Denmark and Germany. Bornholm Energy Island is a key project for Europe to enhance energy security and the exchange of renewable energy. With this award, we reaffirm our strong commitment to building the sustainable and secure energy infrastructure Europe needs, and demonstrate our proven high-voltage power cable capabilities.”
The Bornholm Energy Island initiative plays a central role in Europe’s renewable energy strategy, supporting both regional energy security and cross-border energy exchange. By supplying the HVDC system, NKT will contribute to the efficient integration of offshore wind energy into national grids.
The contract highlights the growing importance of offshore wind development in Northern Europe and the role of advanced transmission systems in ensuring reliable electricity supply. It also reinforces the collaboration between major transmission operators and technology providers in building the infrastructure required to support future energy needs.
Through this agreement, NKT strengthens its position in the European energy market, while contributing to the broader transition toward renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. The company’s technological expertise and commitment to renewable-powered production facilities underline its role in enabling large-scale offshore wind integration projects.
