Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 5, Thyssenkrupp Uhde GmbH, based in Dortmund, Germany, has successfully delivered and commissioned its proprietary EnviNOx technology at Covestro’s Baytown facility in Texas. The installation is a key element of Covestro’s Nitric Acid Unit Climate Initiative (NAUCI), designed to reduce emissions by approximately 154,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalents annually. This project reflects the growing demand for comprehensive industrial emission control solutions. Earlier in 2025, thyssenkrupp Uhde also commissioned a similar project for Covestro in China.
Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, stated: “Reducing greenhouse gases from industrial production is one of the fastest and most impactful ways to cut emissions. We are proud to support Covestro’s strong climate commitments once more with proven technology that delivers measurable results and minimizes emissions.”
Victor Ortega, Baytown site manager and senior vice president of Performance Materials and Operations North America at Covestro, added: “It’s projects such as NAUCI that will help us achieve our ambitious emissions reduction targets in the long-term, and I am confident that our continued efforts will drive even greater success as we work towards achieving climate neutrality by 2035.”
The EnviNOx system has already been applied at multiple Covestro sites worldwide, including its Shanghai facility, where it has significantly reduced emissions. The Baytown project further demonstrates both companies’ commitment to advancing sustainable industrial practices.
In Baytown, the EnviNOx technology was integrated into the nitric acid production process through tertiary abatement in the tail gas system, combined with a secondary measure installed below the ammonia oxidation gauzes for N2O reduction. This combination provides a comprehensive solution for controlling emissions from nitric acid production.
EnviNOx technology is capable of eliminating up to 99% of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions generated during nitric acid production. It is also applicable in other large-scale chemical processes such as caprolactam, adipic acid, or ammonia cracking. With more than two decades of operational success and over 60 installations globally, the technology has already abated more than 260 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents.
The system is designed for high efficiency, durability, and compliance with strict environmental standards. As a tertiary abatement solution, it can be integrated into tail gas systems and is supported by thyssenkrupp Uhde’s technical expertise to ensure long-term performance with minimal maintenance.
The Baytown commissioning underscores the growing role of advanced technologies in enabling industrial companies to meet sustainability targets. By combining established engineering experience with innovative environmental solutions, thyssenkrupp Uhde and Covestro continue to contribute to emission reduction strategies in the chemical industry.
