Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 25, Woodside Energy, Australia’s oil and gas company, has signed a heads of agreement (HoA) with Türkiye’s state-owned Boru Hatları ile Petrol Taşıma A.Ş. (BOTAŞ) for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The volumes are expected to come primarily from Woodside’s Louisiana LNG project in the United States.
Under the terms of the deal, Woodside will provide around 5.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas equivalent of LNG annually for a period of up to nine years, beginning in 2030. The agreement remains subject to the signing of a binding sales and purchase contract.
The signing ceremony was attended by BOTAŞ Chairman and General Manager Abdulvahit Fidan and Woodside’s Chief Operating Officer International Daniel Kalms. The Republic of Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, witnessed the event during his visit to the United States for the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Bayraktar highlighted the significance of the cooperation: “We believe this will be the beginning of a successful relationship between BOTAŞ and Woodside. The companies have already expressed their intention to expand the relationship beyond a proposed LNG sales agreement and build a strategic cooperation in the wider region, and we fully support this vision.”
Kalms emphasized the importance of the agreement for long-term cooperation: “This is a landmark Heads of Agreement between Woodside and BOTAŞ as it is the inaugural long-term LNG supply arrangement between our companies. More importantly, it stands as a testament to BOTAŞ’s confidence in the Louisiana LNG project, the US LNG sector and Woodside’s reputation for reliability and operational excellence.” He further stated that the agreement will enhance energy security and economic growth for both countries.
This development follows a recent LNG supply agreement between BOTAŞ and Mercuria, under which Türkiye is set to receive 4 billion cubic meters of U.S.-sourced LNG annually for 20 years.
The Louisiana LNG project, formerly known as Driftwood LNG, is designed as a three-train foundation development with a capacity of 16.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). A final investment decision was reached in April 2025. Earlier this month, Woodside held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site, noting that work on the first LNG train has already surpassed 22% completion. The company expects to achieve first LNG production in 2029.
The project has drawn attention from several major international players. BP is providing gas to supply the plant, while Aramco has expressed interest in acquiring equity in offtake from the project. In addition, Woodside signed an agreement with Petronas for 1 mtpa of LNG for a term of 15 years, starting in 2028.
The agreement between Woodside and BOTAŞ marks a further step in strengthening Türkiye’s long-term LNG supply security and enhancing its role in global energy trade. It also underscores the strategic importance of the Louisiana LNG project in contributing to diversified and reliable energy flows across multiple markets.
