Michelin and Voliris Partner to Build Hydrogen-Ready Cargo Aircraft by 2028

Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 9, Michelin Inflatable Solutions and Voliris have partnered to develop the NATAC (Navette Aérienne de Transport Automatique de Containers), an autonomous, hydrogen-ready air shuttle designed for zero-emission freight transport. Announced recently, this project aims to transform logistics by delivering up to 30 tonnes of cargo to remote or infrastructure-limited areas without requiring paved runways.

The NATAC combines features of an airplane and an airship, utilizing an inflatable wing envelope crafted by Michelin using its expertise in polymer composites and coated textiles. This critical structure, spanning 8,000 m² with a 25,000 m³ volume across five lobes, is engineered to endure significant internal pressure, aerodynamic forces, and cargo weight while maintaining impermeability to helium and, in the future, hydrogen. Michelin stated: “The envelope must withstand strong internal pressure, aerodynamic stress, and cargo loads — all while remaining impermeable to helium and, ultimately, hydrogen.” A pulley system allows the wing’s shape to adjust during flight for stability across varying altitudes. The design is foldable, transportable in ten standard 40-foot containers, and can be assembled on-site, minimizing environmental impact.

A full-scale NATAC wing demonstrator is planned for ground testing by 2028, following successful trials of a 1:7-scale prototype. The air shuttle will operate autonomously and use hydrogen as both fuel and lifting gas, aligning with sustainable logistics goals. Voliris CEO Alain Bernard said: “This project will redefine infrastructure-efficient logistics and make sustainable air freight a reality.” Michelin emphasized that its involvement reflects a broader shift toward low-carbon composite innovations, extending its expertise beyond traditional mobility solutions.

The NATAC’s design enables access to regions with limited infrastructure, offering a scalable solution for freight transport.
