Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 11, Nestle, a global food company, announced on Wednesday its withdrawal from the Dairy Methane Action Alliance, a coalition launched in December 2023 to reduce methane emissions from dairy farming. The alliance includes members like Danone, Kraft Heinz, and Starbucks, who commit to measuring, disclosing, and reducing methane emissions in their dairy supply chains.

While Nestle did not specify reasons for leaving the alliance, the company emphasized its ongoing dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, across its supply chains. Nestle remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. On Thursday, the company revealed a new partnership with the World Farmers’ Organisation to enhance the resilience of food systems against climate change.

“Nestle regularly reviews its memberships of external organizations,” the Swiss-based company stated. “As part of this process, we have decided to discontinue our membership of the Dairy Methane Action Alliance.”

According to Nestle’s 2024 non-financial statement, the company reduced methane emissions by nearly 21% compared to 2018 levels by the end of 2024. Methane, identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as nearly 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide, is a critical target for climate change mitigation efforts.

The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), which established the alliance, notes that agriculture accounts for nearly 40% of human-caused methane emissions, primarily from livestock. Nestle’s logo has been removed from the EDF’s main website, though its name remains on other pages. The EDF acknowledged Nestle’s decision to step back after reviewing its external partnerships.

“We appreciate Nestlé’s ongoing commitment to acting on dairy emissions through its Dairy Climate Plan and Net Zero Roadmap,” said Katie Anderson, senior director of business, food, and forests at the EDF.

Nestle’s withdrawal reflects a broader trend of companies reassessing participation in climate-focused alliances. Despite exiting the Dairy Methane Action Alliance, Nestle continues to prioritize sustainability through its independent initiatives and new collaborations, such as with the World Farmers’ Organisation.

The company’s efforts focus on reducing environmental impact while supporting global food systems. By advancing its Dairy Climate Plan and Net Zero Roadmap, Nestle aims to contribute to sustainable agricultural practices and address climate challenges effectively.

This move highlights the complexities of balancing corporate partnerships with individual climate strategies. Nestle’s ongoing work underscores its commitment to environmental responsibility, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change through innovative and resilient solutions in the food sector.
