JV Forms to Deliver 200MWh Battery in Finland

Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 19, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), a division of Jameel Energy, has joined forces with AMPTank Energy to develop the 100MW/200MWh SIMO battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lapland, Finland, near Fingrid’s Simojoki substation. This initiative represents the second phase of FRV’s storage development, building on an initial 30MW/60MWh installation.

Once fully operational, the combined phases will establish SIMO as one of Finland’s largest battery storage systems, designed to enhance grid stability and support increased integration of renewable energy in the region north of the Arctic Circle. The 200MWh system will utilize 24 Sungrow PowerTitan batteries for the first phase and 34 Huawei Luna containers for the second, occupying 1.2 hectares of land.

Funding for the project comes from a term loan provided by Kommunalkredit Austria, which served as the sole coordinator and underwriter. This financial support underscores the project’s significance in advancing sustainable energy infrastructure.

David Menéndez, chief executive of FRV Energy Storage, emphasized the project’s importance, stating: “This project represents a key milestone in the consolidation of our energy storage strategy. SIMO will help strengthen grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy into a strategic European market such as Finland.”

Tom Guilfoyle, FRV UK managing director, highlighted the collaborative effort, noting: “The collaboration with Kommunalkredit and the commitment of all partners and stakeholders has been instrumental in bringing this project forward. SIMO reinforces our position as a benchmark in storage, especially in the Nordic region.”

Neal Kumar, president of AMPTank AG, underscored the partnership’s broader impact, saying: “allows us to develop BESS projects at scale and contribute to the EU’s renewable energy targets.” Similarly, Volker Kruse, head of banking at Kommunalkredit, affirmed the project’s environmental significance, stating: “SIMO will play a key role in advancing Finland’s ambitious decarbonisation targets.”

The SIMO project aligns with Finland’s efforts to expand renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions. By stabilizing the grid, the battery system facilitates the integration of intermittent renewable sources, such as wind and solar, into the energy mix.
