Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 21, GAC HYPTEC has received China’s first authorization to conduct Level 3 autonomous-driving tests on highways at speeds up to 120 km/h, the company announced on November 18 via its official WeChat account.

The dedicated L3 testing license applies to the HYPTEC A800 flagship sedan, the first vehicle jointly developed under the strategic partnership between GAC and Huawei. The approval allows real-world validation of conditional automation technology on public expressways at the national speed limit.

The A800 combines GAC’s Xingling safety architecture with Huawei’s ADS 4 intelligent driving system. It features eight layers of redundancy across critical subsystems, including computing, communication, power supply, steering, braking, and perception, ensuring continued operation even under component failure.

The vehicle is equipped with 34 high-precision sensors, incorporating 4D millimeter-wave radar, high-resolution cameras, high-beam LiDAR, and solid-state LiDAR for complete 360-degree environmental awareness. Measuring 5,130 mm in length with a 3,020 mm wheelbase, the sedan uses a 1.5-liter range-extended hybrid powertrain paired with a 250 kW electric motor.

Level 3 capability enables the system to handle all driving tasks under defined highway conditions while requiring the driver to remain prepared to intervene when necessary. The new license confirms the maturity of the integrated technology and paves the way for broader deployment of advanced driver-assistance systems.

The HYPTEC A800 will make its public debut at Auto Guangzhou 2025 on November 21, where its Level 3 highway functions will be demonstrated for the first time. The milestone strengthens GAC HYPTEC’s position as a leader in China’s transition toward higher levels of vehicle automation and intelligent mobility.
