Wedoany.com Report-Dec.5, RWE, Wales' largest power generator, has made a final investment decision to proceed with the £200 million ($267 million) Pembroke Battery Storage project, its biggest battery development in the United Kingdom to date.
Construction will start in H1 2026, with commissioning and operations expected in H2 2028.
The announcement was made by First Minister of Wales Eluned Morgan during the Wales Investment Summit, highlighting the Welsh Government's support for major clean-energy infrastructure that advances the country’s transition to low-carbon electricity.
The 700 MWh facility received planning approval in January 2025 and secured a long-term capacity market contract in the latest UK auction, ensuring a stable revenue stream. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with commercial operations expected in the second half of 2028, pending final grid connection confirmation.
Located on a 5.1-hectare site adjacent to RWE's existing Pembroke Power Station in South Wales, the project will comprise 212 lithium-ion battery containers. Once operational, it will deliver up to 350 MW of power continuously for two hours, providing essential flexibility to the national grid and supporting the planned Pembroke Net Zero Centre decarbonisation hub.
Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation, stated: "Our Pembroke battery is our UK flagship storage project and will make an important contribution to stabilising the UK energy market by efficiently storing surplus energy and feeding it into the national grid in a targeted manner when required."
The development will also incorporate extensive biodiversity enhancements around the site, including wildflower meadows, native woodland and scrub planting, and the creation of a large new pond to benefit local wildlife.
RWE currently operates approximately 1.2 GW of battery storage capacity across the United States, Europe and Australia, with another 2.7 GW under construction worldwide. The company intends to substantially expand its global battery storage portfolio in the coming years to support the integration of renewable energy and enhance grid reliability.
The Pembroke project reinforces RWE's position as a leading investor in British energy storage and contributes to national and regional goals for secure, low-carbon electricity supply.
