Wedoany.com Report-May 18, Ciel & Terre, a France-based supplier of floating photovoltaic (PV) solutions, has successfully completed its largest project in India—a 120 MWp floating solar array located at Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh. This project, developed in collaboration with L&T and SJVN Green Energy Ltd., is designed to generate power for Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Ltd. (RUMSL).

The floating solar plant is installed on the freshwater reservoir of Omkareshwar Dam, covering 20% (210 acres) of the total 1,060-acre water surface. It is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 113,406 tons annually, contributing significantly to India's renewable energy goals.

The plant comprises 407,699 Hydrelio floats, specifically the aiR OPTIM 1400-3 model, arranged in a three-row setup. The facility is divided into 14 individual islands, each with an 8.5 MWp capacity. To address the challenges posed by the hard rock surface of the dam, Ciel & Terre implemented its innovative “rock bolt anchoring” technique. Additionally, a customized floating inverter barge, made from reinforced fiberglass polymer, was deployed. This barge, which can carry over 40 tons, is designed to transport power transformers, inverters, and switchgears, offering 50% higher strength-to-weight ratio than steel while being 30% lighter and more cost-effective.

The floating system was constructed using spin welding, ensuring leak-proof joints. The technology also accommodates the thermal expansion of the floats, preventing water ingress and cracks due to high temperatures.

Deepak Ushadevi, Managing Director and CEO of Ciel & Terre India, discussed the challenges faced during the project, including torrential rain, floods, moderate to gusty winds, waves, and weathered rock surfaces. He noted, “We found solutions, adjusted and conserved each time. This experience not only strengthened our team but also enhanced our ability to deliver bigger and complex projects with even greater efficiency and bold innovations.”

This marks a significant milestone for Ciel & Terre, which has completed over 10 projects in India with a cumulative capacity of more than 425 MWp. On a global scale, the company has successfully commissioned more than 325 projects in over 30 countries, with a total installed capacity of 3.2 GWp and additional projects under various stages of development.
