Wedoany.com Report-Jun 8, Russia’s nuclear regulatory authority, Rostekhnadzor, has granted a five-year license extension for unit 2 of the Smolensk nuclear power plant, extending its operational life from 30 to 45 years. The RBMK-1000 light water graphite reactor, which began commercial operation in 1985, is now authorized to operate until 2030. The plant’s first unit is licensed until 2027, and the third unit until 2034.
Pavel Lubensky, Director of Smolensk NPP, stated: “The second power unit has worked for 30 years, as envisaged by the project, and 10 years in an additional period after a large-scale modernisation and obtaining a licence from Rostekhnadzor. Now we have received the right to operate the nuclear installation for another five years, having justified the operability of its irreplaceable elements, which means that there is an opportunity to provide the consumer with about 35 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and fulfill obligations to produce isotope products for the needs of industry and nuclear medicine.”
The modernization of Smolensk unit 2 began in 2006, involving a comprehensive assessment of all systems and components. Extensive upgrades and equipment replacements were carried out to ensure continued safe operation. Rostekhnadzor conducted thorough inspections of the modernization efforts and verified the training and preparedness of the plant’s workforce before approving the license extension.
The Smolensk nuclear power plant plays a vital role in meeting regional energy demands, supplying 75% of the electricity for the Smolensk region. The facility’s reliable operation supports both industrial and residential energy needs while contributing to the production of isotopes for industry and nuclear medicine.
As part of Russia’s long-term energy strategy, the Smolensk-II project aims to construct two VVER-TOI reactors at a site near the existing plant. These new reactors are intended to replace the output of the current units, with completion targeted for the mid-2030s. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to maintain a stable and sustainable energy supply while modernizing nuclear infrastructure.
This license extension underscores the commitment to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Smolensk nuclear power plant. By modernizing critical systems and extending the operational life of unit 2, the facility continues to provide a reliable energy source and support regional development.
