China Switches on Its Largest Standalone Battery Storage Project

Wedoany.com Report-Jul. 22, The first phase of the Huadian Xinjiang Kashgar battery energy storage project, currently China’s largest standalone energy storage facility, was officially commissioned on July 19. Located 41 kilometers east of Kashgar in the Xinjiang region, the project marks a major step in the development of large-scale energy storage infrastructure in the country.

This initial phase consists of a 500 MW/2 GWh installation and is part of a broader plan to expand the facility to a total capacity of 1 GW/4 GWh. The project covers a land area of approximately 119,000 square meters and represents a total investment of around CNY 1.6 billion (USD 222.9 million).

The energy storage system features 100 lithium iron phosphate (LFP) units. It uses a hybrid design that integrates both grid-forming and grid-following inverters, with each approach applied to half of the installed systems. This configuration enables the plant to enhance grid stability and flexibility, supporting the integration of renewable energy sources into the local power network.

Electricity from the plant is transmitted through a 220 kV line to the Kashgar 750 kV substation, ensuring effective connection to the regional grid. This setup allows the facility to contribute to local energy reliability and reduce peak load pressure, especially during high-demand periods.

The Huadian Xinjiang Kashgar project reflects a strategic move toward strengthening China's energy storage capacity. The combination of large-scale lithium battery systems with advanced inverter technology is expected to improve grid responsiveness, facilitate renewable energy development, and enhance power supply security in western China.

Once fully completed, the expanded 1 GW/4 GWh plant will significantly enhance the region’s energy balancing capabilities, providing stable backup power and supporting efficient electricity dispatch. It is designed to play a key role in local power system operations, particularly in managing fluctuations from renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
